Coast Cafe, West Perth

It's early morning, you're about to head in to work and there's that desperate need for a shot of heavenly caffeine! I know the feeling all too well. While I was still working in the corporate world, I needed that morning coffee, I needed one during my morning tea break and sometimes, I even needed another one at lunch. Addicted much?

But what always made my day was a  happy face behind the counter, making my coffee. Do you know the type of person I'm talking about? Definitely a morning person. And Coast Cafe's barista and owner, Roy, is definitely that person. He's happy, he's bright and he makes a mean cup of coffee. Not to mention, he's a great person at heart.

Coast cafe is a classic-style cafe/restaurant that's situated along the main strip in West Perth, right in front of the bus stop, in fact. If you ever catch the Red Cat into West Perth, make sure you stop at Coast for a coffee and a bite to eat.

They have a great selection for breakfast and lunch and even do corporate catering. Their meals, made from the freshest ingredients are really enjoyable and substantial. I really love their Eggs Benedict. A classic dish that they do well, especially that hollandaise sauce. Yum! Just looking at those pictures is making my mouth water for some more.

We're a huge fan of their coffee that uses freshly roasted coffee beans by Dimattina which hold notes of chocolate, citrus and berry. Roy, is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about coffee not to mention being a super talented barista. He took out the champion title of the 2012 WA Latte Art Competition and then went on to compete in 2013 in the National competition.

During the recent hot summer days, Marinda Leigh's current favourite is Coast's cold drip coffee. Cold drip is a filtered style coffee which takes about 8 hours to produce just 500ml of coffee. The specialty grade beans which Coast selects for this particular style filter is roasted much lighter and of a higher altitude. As a result, it produces a smoother, almost tea-like aroma, taste and aftertaste. Depending on the particular region of the selection, the cup may have 100s of different taste profiles ranging from citrus, berry, almond, chocolate to even tobacco and soil. Kenya beans could have berry and lemon profiles while Ethiopia beans may have notes of strawberry and vanilla.

Coast's cold drip is $4 a glass, and you're welcome to have a taste before you make the decision of buying or not but because it takes 8 hours to produce 500ml, the cafe only sells 10 glasses a day. It's an extremely refreshing drink, especially if you enjoy coffee, but be warned, there is a lot of caffeine in it; I drank two glasses at about 4pm and I was buzzing for the rest of the night.

Enjoying their special "Marinda Leigh ice coffee"
