Tsukiji Fish Market

The Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo is a famous wholesale market for fish, fruits and vegetables and is a major tourist attraction. It's well known for being one of the world's largest fish markets and has a tuna auction that allows only 120 visitors per day. It was recommended that we see the tuna auction but we never made it as the first showing is at 5:25 am and the second is at 5:50. Too early for us!

We did, however make it to the market to eat their famous sushi. Walking through the market was an interesting experience. There were scooters, trucks, forklifts and lots of people going about their everyday business that made it very lively and somewhat scary.

When we arrived to the section with restaurants, we found that there were quite a few different stores and not knowing which one was good, we just joined the queue of one that looked popular. In all honesty, though, they all looked just as popular and busy as the next so just jump in the queue for the one that has less people. We waited in line for about half an hour but the wait was worth it.

Our sushi chef who was absolutely lovely!

We paid 3,500 yen per person for a massive set. We had to pay in cash as they don't accept cards so make sure you bring enough. We were struggling to finish all our sushi by the end but didn't want to be rude and leave any on the plate. It was definitely worth the wait and the trek to Tsukiji for the their sushi. If you worry about the fishy taste in raw fish, I don't think you really have to worry about that here. The sushi is really fresh and doesn't exude that fishy odour.

  1. Woah, pretty pricey but the food looks so amazingly delicious! I can't even imagine how fresh the sushi must be, since it's right inside the market. :O

    1. I actually found the price decent for the amount of sushi that we got! It seemed like it wouldn't stop coming! Very fresh and the chef was very nice to us!
